WaiKikaMooKau Cafe.

If you follow me on social media I'm sure you've heard of WaiKikaMooKau Cafe. It's situated right in the centre of the North Laine area and whilst I pop by to deliver my cupcakes every Friday I hardly ever have the time to stop by and eat. Thankfully I found time to grab a late lunch with a friend there recently, we both ordered burgers because they're my favourite menu item.

Homemade, soy based, and made with plenty of sweet potato WaiKikaMookau's burgers are great. The bun it's served on is soft, seeded and wholewheaty and it comes with salad and a side of fries upon request.

Obviously we added the salad and fries but the burger would be a good take out option just on it's own. I love the fun salads they make to, they're often packed with herbs alongside baby leaves, courgette, carrot and cucumber.

We weren't going to stop there though because WaiKikaMooKau has an amazing array of vegan cakes to choose from these days. We were very tempted by this Beetroot and Avocado cake.

My Speculoos cupcakes were there looking all adorable but obviously I wasn't going to buy a cake that I'd made! Who does that?!

Eventually we settled on a slice of freshly baked lemon cake which was divine.

The frosting was almost buttery in taste and texture and we adored the lemon curd spread generously between the layers of sponge cake. They make a raspberry version of this cake too and I'll definitely be trying that next time.

WaiKikaMooKau are currently looking into vegan cheese options so you can expect to see me shoving a cheeseburger into my face on Instagram sometime soon!

  1. Those cakes all look fantastic! I'm a definite lemon cake lover so I would have probably made the same choice :) I wish we had somewhere in Edinburgh that did vegan cake like this.

    1. Ah but you have Henderson's cherry pie! I wish we could do a cake for pie swap!

  2. The name of the cafe - so funny to say! The burger and salad and fries look amazing, I like the look of that big slice of pickle hanging out the side. The cakes look fab too - I looove zesty lemon desserts, and your cupcakes look delicious. The decoration on the choc cake is rad too!

  3. I'd buy your Speculoos cupcakes (Poopie Bitch makes those for Imagine, and I can never resist them!)! But that lemon cake looks terrific too!!

  4. So it turns out you don't actually know what a vegan is. You think it is ok to eat milk products and still call yourself a vegan, because 'it isn't about being strict', it's just about image.

    1. Hi Anonymous, how brave of you to come to my blog and insult me whilst withholding your name! I assume you're mis-quoting me from The Argus where I said that veganism isn't about total purity, I never suggested it wasn't about being strict. I can assure you that I do not eat/drink milk from animals.

  5. Dear Anonymous/vegan police... If you care to read the post properly you'll see there is absolutely no mention of milk products. Not sure who you are to judge anybody anyway.
    Kindest regards.

  8. I love their burgers, a must every time I find myself in Brighton. In future I'll have to make time for cake and tea there too.

My only issue with Wai Kika Moo Kau is the early closing time.

    1. That's an issue with so many Brighton places! They are now open until 8 or 9 (I think) on Friday and Saturday evenings so you should totally pop in for some cake!

    1. They're going to stick with one brand and are considering Violife, the owners travelling right now so it's taking a little while!

  10. Woah, those desserts...! As tasty and wholesome as those burgers sound, the cakes are what sold me. The elegant swirl of nuts decorating the beetroot and avocado cake is simply gorgeous, and it sounds like such an intriguing treat.
