Pie-Day Friday!

Hello & welcome to my first Vegan MoFo Pie-Day Friday post!

Today I have this beauty for you, the Old-Fashioned Chocolate Pudding Pie from Vegan Pie In the Sky.


As usual I have one rule about the recipes I pick during MoFo, I can't have made them before! This makes it more exciting for me because I get to try new things, things I may not otherwise pick, and it's more exciting for you because, well, perhaps things will go wrong & that's usually pretty funny!

I've already made both the cherry and apple pies from VPITS so I decided to pick one with a different crust so that it would be all new, I also let Nick help pick which is how we ended up with a chocolate pie rather than something fruity!

I was happy to discover that I had almost everything the recipe called for already and I only needed to buy almond milk and biscuits for the base.

The recipe calls for a Graham Cracker Crust, as you can't get Graham crackers in the UK (except at expensive import stores) I picked up some Cooperative brand Wholemeal Digestives. I'd never realised these were vegan before so that was a fun new discovery. The crust was super easy to make, smoosh biscuits into a fine crumb, mix stuff in, press into pie pan, bake.

I have to say that I was a little worried at this stage that my 9 1/2 inch pie pan was a little too full of crust but I was feeling too lazy to scrape any out and start again and I like biscuits so I ploughed ahead.

Next I got out the ingredients for the pudding itself.


As I said I only had to buy the almond milk, which cost £3 (appx $4.80), but I decided that as it makes up the bulk of the recipe I'd go for it rather than just using soy which is what I often do when a recipe calls for almond milk.

The pudding was super easy to throw together, my arm hurt a little after 7 minutes of constant whisking but whatever, it'll be good for "the guns"! Next I had to execute patience and wait the three hours and 15 minutes needed for the pie to cool & then set. If you're interested I used that time to call my dad and to panic massively about the 2k (haha, yeah, I know that's not very far!) run I'm taking part in on Sunday to raise money for Rise.

I'd never had any kind of pudding pie before & I was worried that it may be like a cheesecake or an Alpro soya dessert both of which I dislike but nope, this is great pie.


The pie filling itself is both smooth and creamy, just like it's described in the book, and I loved the sweet and crumbly biscuit base. I won't show you what it looked like after slicing as I'm not the best at getting pie outa the pan in one piece!

This is definitely a winner in my book and I already cannot wait for next week's Pie-Day Friday.

  1. Puddin' pie is probably my favourite kind of pie. I haven't made that recipe yet, but I love the idea of it because I almost always have all the filling ingredients on hand.

  2. i've made this twice. the second was last week. i used trader joe's coconut wafers for the crust.

  5. Mmm, I love the look of that pie! I've made that recipe as well and mine didn't make it out of the tin in pretty slices either, but it still tasted great (though I did think the filling was a little like Alpro chocolate puddings - but maybe I'm remembering it wrong).   6. Right so now I guess I need to buy VPITS? That pie looks delicious and it's not something I have ever tried before.

  9. "well perhaps things will go wrong and that's usually pretty funny" - LOL doesn't look like anything went wrong here :) and good luck with the run too...you better eat another pie, just to give you some energy ;)

  11. I'm now convinced more than ever that I NEED that book! That pie looks super chocolatey. Is the filling like eating pudding or is it firmer than pudding?

    1. I'm not 100% sure, the only pudding I've ever tried is Alpro pudding which is a European brand. The pie filling is definitely firmer than than and slightly less sweet.
